What is Kiteboarding?
Kiteboarding/kitesurfing is a water sport that uses large kites to harnesses the wind to pull a rider across the water. It combines the aspects of paragliding, surfing, windsurfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, and wakeboarding. Kiteboarding is among the less expensive and more convenient sailing sports.
How it originated
The oldest depiction of a kite is from a mesolithic period cave painting in Muna island, southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, which has been dated from 9500–9000 years B.C.
And in the 1800s George Pocock used kites to propel carts and ships, using a four-line control system that us kiteboarders commonly use today. Both carts and boats were able to turn and sail upwind.
In October 1977 Gijsbertus Adrianus Panhuise (Netherlands) received the first patent for KiteSurfing. The patent covers, specifically, a water sport using a floating board of a surfboard type where a pilot standing up on it is pulled by a wind-catching device of a parachute type tied to his harness on a trapeze-type belt. This patent did not result in any commercial interest.
Until later two brothers, Bruno Legaignoux and Dominique Legaignoux, from the Atlantic coast of France, developed kites for kitesurfing in the late 1970s and early 1980s and patented an inflatable kite design in November 1987, a design that has been used by companies to develop their own products.
Bill Roeseler, a Boeing aerodynamicist, and his son Cory patented the "KiteSki" system in 1994. It featured water skis powered by a two-line delta kite, controlled by a bar-mounted winch/brake. The kite could launch from water and go upwind. In 1995, Cory demonstrated its capabilities in New Zealand, and by the late 1990s, the design evolved into a surfboard-like single board.
